The SE-8 amp is a "Hi-Octane" design from ax84.com. It was designed to deliver rock'n'roll high (but not extreme) gain through preamp distortion, with some power tube crunch at higher volumes. It's very glassy with an EL84 tube, even a bit fizzy, and a bit smoother and darker with a 6V6.

Controls are Gain1, Gain2, Treble, Bass, Midrange, and Master Volume

This is the layout I used (note correction of ground 3/10/5). It enables either octal power tubes (6V6, 6L6, or EL34) or an EL84 tube. I can leave both tubes in the socket and switch between them. Also, I have switchable cathode resistors for biasing (6V6 or 6L6). This turned out to be unnecessary as the 6V6 works fine with the octal tube resistor (180 ohm). Note my layout has the input on the left.

The chassis layout I chose is for a head with the inputs on the left. This is opposite from most Hi-Octanes, but I like having the input, then gains in order of the stage, tone stack and Master Vol last, on the right. I don't have a case made yet, just the bare chassis for now. On the back you can see the multiple speaker outs for 4, 8 and 16-ohm operation:
Inside, the large Hammond chassis leaves plenty of room.  Here are some closeups for those who want to put a picture next to the layout.

Some folks wonder about high gain lead dress- how to do it...here's a shot of the preamp. No oscillations here, you can crank this up all the way. Also, note the "bright cap" (C7 on the AX84 schematic) is on a switch with another cap to ground, so this, being an on-off-on switch, allows bright cap in (treble boost), bright cap out (neutral), and cap to ground (treble smooth).

A/C Power...note the extra fuse in the B+ line:

Closeup of the little DC supply for the heaters. This allows me to raise the DC reference, reducing hum from the heaters. You can also just run a line from the cathode of the power tubes, but with two power sockets, this way keeps the wiring more compact.:

MP3s ...more at the Hi Octane project page at AX84. Settings are G1=Gain1, G2=Gain2, T/B/M treble bass midrange, MV=Master Vol
Dirty Blues1 was done with these settings: G1:3, G2:7, T:8, M:3, B:3, MV:2 and is a good example of the SE-8 at 'Bedroom' volume. Pickup was a hopped up PAF (Dimarzio FRED) in an SG. No effects.

Dirty Blues1 are at the same settings, just a vintage-output PAF in the bridge.
